SHI Secures Order for a 75 MW Dedicated Biomass-Fired Power Generation Facility

November 12, 2021

Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (President and CEO: Shinji Shimomura, hereinafter referred to as "SHI") secured an order from Sakaide Biomass Power Limited Liability Company, which was established by six companies—Shikoku Electric Power Co., Inc. (Director and President: Keisuke Nagai), Hazama Ando Corporation (Representative Director and President: Masato Fukutomi), Prominet Power Co., Ltd. (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd.; President: Satoshi Baba), erex Co., Ltd. (Representative Director and President: Hitoshi Honna), Shinko Denso Co., Ltd. (President: Junzo Tanimoto), and Sakaide Yusengumi Co., Ltd. (President: Masahiko Aya)—for the construction of a 75 MW biomass-fired thermal power plant (output: 74,950 kW; planned construction site: Sakaide City, Kagawa Prefecture), including civil engineering works, based on a turnkey contract. SHI will coordinate EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) aspects for the project, which is scheduled to start commercial operation in June 2025.
The plant will use a “circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler,” a high-efficiency biomass-fired boiler that employs the reheating system*1 and uses wood pellets as its primary fuel. The SHI Group has supplied more 500 CFB boilers in Japan and abroad,*2 and SHI’s CFB boilers have a large share of the high-efficiency biomass power generation sector. Sakaide Biomass Power’s high regard for SHI’s delivery record and project proposal were leading factors in its decision to use a SHI CFB boiler in its project.
SHI will continue contributing to a stable electric power supply and the realization of a decarbonized society by pursuing exceptional fuel diversity in CFB boiler technology and providing highly efficient power generation facilities with the aim of effectively utilizing resources and reducing environmental impact.

Facility outline
Boiler type: Circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler (Reheating system)
Gross output: Approx. 74,950 kW
Fuel: Wood pellets
Scheduled start of service: June 2025

*1: Reheating system: A technology that makes high-efficiency power generation possible by sending steam that was expanded in a steam turbine back to the boiler, reheating it, and then sending it back to the steam turbine.
*2: SHI Group: SHI and Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW), a subsidiary. The figure provided includes CFB technology licensees of the SHI Group.
