Offshore wind power generation business

Advancing renewable energy to help achieve carbon neutrality

Our offshore wind power generation business draws from the SHI Group's large structure manufacturing capabilities. From two factories—in Saijo City, Ehime Prefecture, and Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture—it produces foundation structures for both bottom-fixed and floating offshore wind power generation facilities.

About offshore wind power generation

Offshore wind power generation involves installing wind turbines at sea to generate electricity. It converts wind energy into electrical energy without emitting CO₂ during power generation, making it a renewable energy source. While Japan has limited land, its island geography offers great potential for offshore wind power generation, which is seen as a key solution for reaching carbon neutrality.

Features

Harnessing the SHI Group's leading capabilities in large structure manufacturing

We manufacture the foundation structures for offshore wind power generation facilities through a collaboration between Sumitomo Heavy Industries Process Equipment Co., Ltd. and Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering Co., Ltd.

Sumitomo Heavy Industries Process Equipment Co., Ltd. possesses advanced processing, fabrication, and welding technologies for extra-thick cylindrical structures, developed through manufacturing large pressure vessels and steel structures.
The Yokosuka Shipyard of Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering Co., Ltd. possesses engineering expertise and technologies for construction and mass production of large structures with extensive coatings, gained through shipbuilding.

Leveraging the manufacturing strengths for large structures of these two leading factories in the SHI Group, we have built a production system based on collaboration and specialization, enabling us to further the growth of offshore wind power generation.

World-class factories in eastern and western Japan

At Ehime Works (Saijo Factory), the largest facility in the SHI Group, we have installed a large bending roller to enhance the processing capacity for extra-thick steel plates. This will become operational from May 2025.
Located in the Tokyo metropolitan area, Yokosuka Works (Yokosuka Shipyard) is one of Japan's leading large construction dock facilities. It is the biggest manufacturing site for large structures in eastern Japan, capable of processing 90,000 tons of steel a year.

Advanced quality and process control skills

With our many years of expertise in manufacturing, we implement advanced quality and process control to deliver high-quality products. At the Yokosuka Shipyard, we utilize our 10 painting rooms to ensure high-quality painting in optimal conditions.
We are building a mass production system for foundation structures by combining various production facilities with Toyota Production System and ensuring alignment between our two factories.
Our two factories have obtained ISO9001, ISO14001, and ISO45001 certifications, and each company has acquired various other certifications.

Engineering

Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering Co., Ltd. has been developing its shipbuilding technology since its founding more than 120 years ago. Using that shipbuilding technology, we can handle engineering operations and construction for the design and manufacturing of floating structures, as well as ships for offshore wind power generation.
