SHI Secures Order for a 5 MW-Class Biomass-Fired Power Plant

June 28, 2021

Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Limited (President and CEO: Shinji Shimomura) secured an order from MT Energy Co., Ltd. (Representative Director: Yoshimi Ganmyou) for the construction of MT Energy Power Plant (planned construction site: Miyakonojo City, Miyazaki Prefecture).

The power plant will be a biomass-fired power generation facility that will be fueled by wood chips produced from waste forest thinning in Miyakonojo City, Miyazaki Prefecture, and other areas. It is expected to help revitalize the materials production industry as well as the local lumber industry by effectively utilizing local wood biomass resources.

The facility will use a “circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler.” The SHI Group has supplied more 500 CFB boilers in Japan and abroad.*1 SHI’s CFB boilers have a large share of the high-efficiency biomass power generation sector, and MT Energy’s recognition of SHI’s track record here was a factor in its decision to use one in its power plant project.
SHI will contribute to a stable electric power supply and the realization of a low-carbon society by providing reliable and highly efficient power generation facilities fueled by biomass and resource-saving low-grade fuels that are effective in combating global warming.
