Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering Receives Approval in Principle (AiP) for LNG Dual-Fuel Middle Size Tanker
December 25, 2019
On December 10, 2019, Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering Co., Ltd. (President: Hideshi Shimamoto, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd., hereinafter referred to as “Our company”) has received Approval in Principle for an LNG dual-fuel middle size tanker from Lloyd’s Register.
The design incorporates two IMO Type-C LNG tanks and an FGSS (Fuel Gas Supply System) in our company’s middle size tankers, which have already gained significant market popularity. The ship can store enough amount of LNG fuel with no reduction in cargo tank capacity. The feasibility of incorporation had been explored under cooperation with Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. The use of LNG fuel enables significant reduction in sulfur oxide (SOx), nitrogen oxide (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) contents in exhaust gas emission. Demands for such LNG-fueled ships are expected to grow as the shipping industry will face stricter emission requirements in the future. Our middle size tankers have achieved great environmentally friendly performance, and their adaptation to LNG fuel will enhance substantially higher reduction than that required by Phase 3 of the energy efficiency design index (EEDI) after 2025.
We will continue making full use of our technology and development capabilities to meet the social needs, supply the customers with eco-friendly ships achieving significant reduction in greenhouse gas and all other environmental loads and contribute to sustainable development of the shipping industry.
