SHI Secures Order for a 75 MW Dedicated Biomass Combustion Power Plant

March 30, 2018

Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (President and CEO: Shunsuke Betsukawa; hereinafter referred to as “SHI”) has secured an order from Nishinippon Plant Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd. (President: Soujyu Hirata) for a 75 MW dedicated biomass combustion power plant (hereinafter referred to as the "Plant").

The Plant will be delivered to the biomass power plant site (project location: Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture) planned by Shimonoseki Biomass Energy GK. (President: Masakatsu Terazaki), a company jointly established by the three Kyushu Electric Power Group companies of Kyuden Mirai Energy Company, Incorporated (Representative Director and President: Yasuji Akiyama), Nishinippon Plant Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd., and Kyuden Sangyo Co., Inc. (President: Toru Yoshizako). The Plant will use wood pellets and palm kernel shells as its main fuel sources and is designed to be an extremely high-efficiency, dedicated biomass combustion power plant that utilizes a reheating system(*1). SHI will supply a Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boiler, turbine equipment, and other equipment to Nishinippon Plant Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd., the Plant’s EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) contractor.

The Plant utilizes the SHI Group's “Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boiler technology” which has been used in over 490 references(*2) globally. It will be one of the largest dedicated biomass combustion power plants with a Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boiler in Japan. The Company’s boilers command a high share in the high-efficiency biomass power plant market worldwide, and this track record was a key factor in the securing of this order.

SHI will continue to supply high-efficiency power plants of varying capacities that utilize low-rank- coal and biomass fuels allowing for efficient fuel utilization and reducing emissions, thus contributing to a stable power supply and global warming countermeasures.

  • Power Plant Outline

Boiler Type: Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) Boiler (Reheating System)
Gross Output: 74,980 kW
Power Generation Method: Steam Turbine
Scheduled Commercial Operation Date: January 2022

(*1) Reheating System: In this system, the steam that expands inside a steam turbine is re-sent into the boiler. By re-heating and re-sending the surplus steam into the steam turbine, high-efficiency power generation is achieved.
(*2) The SHI Group: SHI and its subsidiary Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW).
The values include references of the SHI Group and licensees of SFW for CFB technology.
