Establishment of a Global R&D Centre for Industrial Gearboxes in Belgium
January 11, 2018
Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd (President and CEO: Shunsuke Betsukawa; hereinafter referred to as “SHI” or the “Company”) has announced the opening of a Global R&D Centre located in Edegem, Belgium. The facility, which will focus on the research and development of industrial gearboxes, is located within the facility of Hansen Industrial Transmissions NV (hereinafter referred to as “Hansen”).
On January 4th (local time), a ceremony was held to commemorate the opening of the Global R&D Centre. In attendance were Flemish Minister Philippe Muyters (Flemish Minister of Work, Economy, Innovation and Sports), Edegem Mayor Koen Metsu, and various other guests and stakeholders.
Since 2011 when Hansen became a subsidiary of SHI, the Company has been expanding the sale of its industrial gearboxes not only to markets in Japan, the US and Asia, but also further afield to Europe, the Middle East and Africa. This decision to open the R&D Centre within Hansen’s facility was made mainly because the most advanced technology and information is centralized in this part of Europe. The R&D Centre plans to make even more use of the outstanding gear technology that Hansen possesses, develop new global products and service solutions that accurately meet the demands of customers across various regions. In the future, the R&D Centre will be the central point in which SHI accelerates its efforts to provide solutions to issues that global customers face in the field of industrial gearboxes.
