Receive an order for continuous slab casting machine from South Korean Pohang Iron & Steel Co., LTd. (POSCO)

August 03, 2000

Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (President: Yoshio Hinoh) received an order for a 2-strand continuous casting machine (CCM) from Pohang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. (POSCO), the largest producer of crude steel in the world. Once completed in the Autumn of 2001, the continuous slab casting machine ordered will be installed at the Pohang Works, No. 2 Melting Shop. With this new order, Sumitomo Heavy Industries will become the first Japanese corporation to make a contact to sell a continuous slab casting machine to POSCO.

Four 2-strand slab casting machines manufactured by European enterprises are now installed at POSCO's Pohang Works, No. 2 Melting Shop. One of these four is to be replaced by the newly ordered machine, which will have an annual capacity of about 2,800,000 tons. The new machine will be used for the production of high-quality steel sheets for automobiles.

German SMS Demag AG, Austrian Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau, and other European companies participated in the tender together with the Sumitomo Heavy Industries. The order comes as a welcome consequence of the high evaluation of the high-speed casting performance and other technologies of Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd.

Since completing its first continuous casting machine in Japan in 1960, Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. has delivered many machines to ironworks in the world such as in the U.S.A., South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, and Iran, as well as to many companies in Japan. Backed by this experience, the corporation has already established high-level technology for design and manufacture of a high-speed casting system for CCMs. The scope of the current service is design, supply of a machine, and dispatch of installation instructors to the site.
