SHI Delivers a 74 MW-Class Woody Biomass and Recycled Fuel-Fired Power Boiler to Tosoh

August 06, 2026

Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (Head office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President and CEO: Toshiro Watanabe; hereinafter referred to as “SHI”) completed the construction of a 74 MW-class woody biomass and recycled fuel-fired power boiler (hereinafter referred to as “the boiler”) for which it received an order from Tosoh Corporation (Head office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President: Mamoru Kuwada; hereinafter referred to as "Tosoh"), and delivered the boiler to Tosoh.

The boiler accommodates the use of a variety of fuels including construction waste-derived fuel and RPF*1 in addition to woody biomass fuels such as white pellets.

In recent years, energy-intensive industries, including the chemical industry, have faced the critical challenge of addressing fuel procurement risks while also advancing decarbonization. The operation of the boiler is expected to contribute significantly to reducing the Tosoh Group’s CO2 emissions *2 while simultaneously helping to stabilize fuel procurement and curb fuel conversion costs.

Power plants utilizing woody biomass and recycled fuels are leading decarbonization solutions capable of delivering benefits at an early stage, based on mature technology that has already been applied practically or commercialized.
The SHI Group has a delivery record of over 560 circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers within and outside Japan*3, and holds a significant share of the high-efficiency biomass power generation market. Going forward, SHI will continue to contribute to the stable supply of electricity and utilities and to the realization of a decarbonized society by further enhancing the superior fuel flexibility of its CFB boiler technology and providing high-efficiency power plants that contribute to the effective use of resources and the reduction of environmental impact.

[Outline of the boiler]
Boiler type: CFB boiler (Reheating system)
Maximum steam generation capacity: 270 t/h
Fuel type: woody biomass fuels, construction waste-derived fuel, RPF, etc.
 Start of operation: April 2026

*1: Abbreviation for "Refuse-derived paper and plastics-densified fuel." It is a solid fuel made from recovered paper and plastic waste.

*2: Approx. 500,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent annually under Tosoh’s operating plan

*3: SHI Group: SHI and its subsidiary Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW). This record includes deliveries by licensees of the SHI Group’s CFB technology.
