SHI and SCM jointly develop "InCab@Nav," an app that enables natural language search of hydraulic excavator manual

May 28, 2026

Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (Head office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President and CEO: Toshiro Watanabe; hereinafter referred to as “SHI”) has jointly developed "InCab@Nav," an app for searching hydraulic excavator operation manuals for hydraulic excavators (hereinafter referred to as "the App"), together with Sumitomo Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. (Head office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Isamu Mitsuhashi; wholly owned by SHI; hereinafter referred to as “SCM”).
When an operator submits a query via a smartphone or tablet device, the App searches for content within operation manuals that corresponds to the query and presents that content in summary form. This will enable the improved utilization of hydraulic excavator functions, improved usability, on-site issue resolution by operators, and other new forms of user support.

[Development Background]
In recent years, hydraulic excavators and other types of construction machinery have become progressively more advanced and functionalized, offering a greater range of information and functions that can be utilized onsite. At the same time, due to increasingly diverse onsite environments, work content and personnel compositions, the number of cases of operators with varying levels of experience handling the same construction machinery is increasing as well. Given this current situation, the creation of environments in which necessary information on construction machinery can be accessed more smoothly during operation without looking through paper manuals or screens is taking on greater importance.

To address that challenge, SHI and SCM set out to develop the App as a new means of accessing information that utilizes generative AI and natural language processing to enable users of construction machinery to "ask what they want to know with ease, on the spot, and in different languages."

[Outline of the App]
The App, which is for smartphone and tablet devices and supports natural language processing
allows necessary information contained within operation manuals for hydraulic excavators to be accessed intuitively and swiftly.

●Features of the App
Through the following features, the App will maximize the value of hydraulic excavators while simultaneously contributing to areas such as the reducing operator downtime and the reduction of the burden of introductory training for hydraulic excavators.
(1) Allows operators to ask questions in natural language and displays the information they need in summarized form onscreen
(2) Helps operators quickly resolve operational and functional issues on-site.
(3) Designed for easy use, even less experienced operators.
(4) Supports multilingual use at sites with multinational teams.

●How the App works
(1) Operators pose a question using voice or text
(Ex.: "How do I use the payload function?", "How do I adjust seat height?", etc.)
(2) The App analyzes the content inputted and searches an operation manual database for relevant information
(3) The App summarizes and extracts relevant areas in manuals and displays them on screen with accompanying images in an easy-to-understand manner
This makes it possible to quickly access the information needed without flipping through an operation manual.

The App introduces a new form of user support that improves usability for operators and helps them resolve issues on-site. Going forward, SHI and SCM will continue to pursue the development of technologies and services that contribute to the improved ease of use of construction machinery as well as to greater productivity and satisfaction at construction sites.

[Exhibit at CSPI 2026]
An exhibit where visitors can experience the convenience of the App for themselves is scheduled to be featured at SCM's booth at the 8th International Construction & Survey Productivity Improvement EXPO (CSPI 2026), which will be held in June 2026.
Additionally, to coincide with this exhibit, a beta version of the App is scheduled to be offered for download on the App Store and Google Play. Please note that this exhibit and the provision of the beta version of the App are intended to introduce services currently under development. The official timing for when the App will be offered will be decided based on the future state of development and preparation.
