Sumitomo Heavy Industries Process Equipment Introduces Large-Sized Bending Rollers for Foundation Structures for Offshore Wind Power Generation

June 12, 2025

Sumitomo Heavy Industries Process Equipment Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President: Shigeru Tajima; a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd.; "Sumitomo Heavy Industries Process Equipment") has introduced large-sized bending rollers("Devices") that it had been preparing for the manufacture of foundation structures for offshore wind power generation at a plant in Saijo City, Ehime.

Bending rollers are devices used to bend steel sheets into a cylindrical shape. The bending process for ultra-thick steel sheets is indispensable in the manufacture of foundation structures for offshore wind power generation (transition pieces and jackets for bottom-fixed type and floating structures) that the Sumitomo Heavy Industries Group engages in.
Sumitomo Heavy Industries Process Equipment boasts advanced canning technologies as a result of working on the manufacture of large-sized pressure vessels thus far. The Company will augment its production capacity with the introduction of the Devices and apply its technologies to the manufacture of foundation structures for offshore wind power generation as it moves forward.
Additionally, in prototyping efforts with a sheet thickness of 100 mm and a diameter of 8 m conducted with the assumption of transition pieces manufactured using the Devices, Sumitomo Heavy Industries Process Equipment was also able to verify that quality and time taken for processes were in line with expected levels.

As part of its growth strategy, the Sumitomo Heavy Industries Group is actively investing in new business pertaining to the decarbonized energy, resource recycling and service domains. This initiative is part of efforts for the "establishment of an offshore wind energy business promotion project"* announced on March 5, 2024. The Sumitomo Heavy Industries Group will continue to push forward with preparations for the commercialization of foundation structures for offshore wind power generation as it proceeds to do its part for the realization of a decarbonized society through the promotion of renewable energy.
