Sumitomo Heavy Industries Himatex is the First Hot Rolling Mill Roll Manufacturer in Japan to Obtain SuMPO EPD Certification
April 25, 2025
Sumitomo Heavy Industries Himatex Co., Ltd. (HMX, Head office: Niihama, Ehime, Representative Director, Takaaki Kido, a fully owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd.), is the first manufacturer of hot rolling mill rolls in Japan to obtain the SuMPO EPD (Sustainable Management Promotion Organization, Environmental Product Declaration) (formerly Ecoleaf), the basis of SuMPO’s environmental labelling program.
The EPD is an international framework for transparent data that uses life cycle assessment (LCA) to quantify and display environmental data about products. Through this certification, an independent body has verified the validity and conformance to international standards of environmental data for hot rolling mill rolls produced by HMX. This makes it possible to provide more transparent environmental data to customers wanting to understand and reduce CO2 emissions associated with the goods they purchase.

To implement a circular economy, HMX has adopted an environmentally conscious approach and utilizes recycled materials as the principal raw material for its rolls.
Used rolls are collected from customers for reworking and scrap iron generated during earlier production is used in the production of new rolls.
Sumitomo Heavy Industries Group is promoting sustainable operations from the standpoint of multiple stakeholders to deliver additional social and corporate value. In line with our stakeholders’ expectations, we will continue to boost our ESG initiatives, such as reducing environmental impact across the entire value chain, and ensuring respect for human rights and corporate ethical standards, as a member of the global community.
