Signing the UN Global Compact

Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (Head Office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President, and CEO: Shinji Shimomura; hereinafter “SHI”) hereby announces signing the UN Global Compact (hereinafter “UNGC”) and being registered as a participating company on January 15, 2025.

UNGC is a world-leading sustainability initiative in which the UN and the private sector (companies and organizations) participate in an effort to build a sound global society. The companies and organizations that sign the UNGC are required to endorse the 10 principles related to human rights, labor, the environment, and anti-corruption and continue to put effort into achieving them under the commitment of the head of the company or organization.

In 2024, SHI established a new purpose: “Enhance society and those within it with compassion through our ownership and vision” to promote sustainability management in close collaboration with the entire group.

SHI will take this opportunity of signing the UNGC to further enhance its efforts to comply with global standards together with the stakeholders and play its role as part of global society.


The 10 Principles of the UN Global Compact

Human Rights
Principle 1: Support and respect for the protection of human rights
Principle 2: Non-complicity in human rights abuses

Labor
Principle 3: Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining
Principle 4: Elimination of forced and compulsory labor
Principle 5: Effective abolition of child labor
Principle 6: Elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation

Environment
Principle 7: A precautionary approach to environmental challenges
Principle 8: Environmental responsibility
Principle 9: Development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies

Anti-Corruption
Principle 10: Initiatives against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery
