SHI Signs an MOU for Proton Beam FLASH Technology with Samsung Medical Center

Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (Head Office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President, and CEO: Shinji Shimomura; hereinafter “SHI”) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (hereinafter “MOU”) with Samsung Medical Center (Republic of Korea; hereinafter “SMC”) to promote research and development of “proton beam FLASH,” a new technology in proton beam therapy. The MOU is intended to contribute to the further development of cancer treatment through the sharing of expertise and knowledge possessed by both parties.

Proton beam FLASH technology is expected to improve treatment efficacy while reducing side effects by delivering a higher dose in a shorter time than conventional proton beam therapy. This technology is attracting global attention due to its potential to help improve the quality of life of cancer patients.

SHI and SMC will leverage their respective strengths to jointly conduct basic research and clinical trials relating to proton beam FLASH technology. SHI will provide cutting-edge technology founded on its extensive experience in developing and manufacturing proton beam therapy devices, while SMC, a medical care leader in Asia possessing a wealth of clinical experience and high medical standards, will work towards achieving effective, patient-centered treatment.

SHI will continue to advance cancer treatment through technical innovation in proton beam therapy.
