Establishment of an Offshore Wind Energy Business Promotion Project

March 05, 2024

Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (Head Office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President, and CEO: Shinji Shimomura; hereinafter “SHI”) has established an Offshore Wind Energy Business Promotion Project as a new division to strengthen its foundation structures business and related ship business in offshore wind power generation.

In the Energy & Lifeline segment, one of SHI’s constituent segments, SHI is actively investing management resources in new businesses associated with decarbonized energy, resource recycling, and the service field as part of its growth strategy.

The Offshore Wind Energy Business Promotion Project is tasked with overseeing activities concerning sales, design, and manufacture associated with the commercialization of foundation structure manufacturing. It also serves as a sales contact for offshore wind power-related ships and various work ships.

■Background behind the project team’s establishment and overview
SHI’s previous Medium-Term Management Plan grouped the company’s businesses into four segments by considering affinity among the products and technologies of each Group company. The Medium-Term Management Plan 2026, which began in 2024, identifies two main strategic issues within the Energy & Lifeline segment— (1) carbon neutral business and (2) renewable energy promotion business—with the aim of achieving collaboration and mutual synergy within the segment.

In offshore wind power generation, a field oriented toward achieving carbon neutrality, Sumitomo Heavy Industries Process Equipment Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “SHI Process Equipment”), Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “SHI Marine & Engineering”), and others in the Group possess many technologies that can be converted to the manufacture of foundation structures of either the fixed bottom-type or floating type. In light of this, SHI decided to establish the Offshore Wind Energy Business Promotion Project in the Energy & Lifeline segment and to charge it with overseeing the commercialization of these technologies.

SHI Process Equipment has decided to install a large bending roller to strengthen its capacity for processing the ultra-thick steel plates that are used for foundation structures. SHI Process Equipment plans to begin operating the roller in May 2025 and is proceeding with other preparations necessary for foundation structure manufacturing.
SHI Marine & Engineering has been taking steps to improve its production system. Its effort includes the strengthening of its facilities with an eye to applying the engineering capabilities and construction/mass production technologies for large structures with heavy coating that it has accumulated through shipbuilding to the manufacture of foundation structures.

SHI will contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society by expanding its activities centered on the Offshore Wind Energy Business Promotion Project and supporting offshore wind power generation development through the manufacture of foundation structures and other endeavors.
