SHI will construct a New Technology Research Center to Serve as an R&D Base for Elemental Technologies and New Products

June 13, 2023

Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (Head Office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President, and CEO: Shinji Shimomura; hereinafter “SHI”) will construct a New Technology Research Center (hereinafter "the Center") as an R&D base for elemental technologies and new products at its Yokosuka Works (Yokosuka-shi, Kanagawa). The Center will develop and expand SHI’s facilities in IoT/AI/data science, automation/autonomy, and decarbonization and CO2 use and storage technologies—fields that will become increasingly important in the years ahead—and thereby drive the discovery of new ideas and innovation.

The Center will house numerous settings designed to stimulate mutual interaction among SHI Group employees and researchers. With a cafeteria, relaxation lounge, and other facilities for winding down, it will provide the optimal working environment for facilitating energetic research by Group employees from all corners of the globe. In addition, the Center will also have a gallery presenting SHI’s technologies. Its aim will be to spark the emergence of new technologies—and the collaborative creation of technologies— with outside partners as well as within the SHI Group.

On the environmental side, the Center will have a solar power system on its rooftop and raise the energy-saving performance of its air conditioners, lighting, and other equipment with an eye to acquiring ZEB Ready certification. Human resources, general affairs, and information system departments will also be established on-site. They will serve to expand and strengthen the Yokosuka Works’ overall management and communication functions and provide a base for regional safety and disaster prevention.
