Testing Structural Integrity of World Class Goliath Crane
There have been the demands at shipyards in Japan to increase their building capabilities by upgrading their Goliath cranes to the 800t class from the existing 300t class, which were placed in the early 1970s. Sumitomo Heavy Industries Engineering and Services Co.,Ltd. (SES) recently delivered a 1200t goliath crane, which is the worldfs largest goliath crane, to Nagasaki Shipyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. SES is the only manufacturer in Japan to successfully construct and deliver 800t goliath cranes in series for Japanese shipbuilders. SES utilized the design technologies, which have been accumulated through the construction of these cranes, in designing the 1200t goliath crane, one of the largest goliath cranes in the world. Furthermore, SES carried out vibration measurements and observations on the actual crane and confirmed the validity of SESfs wind resistance design. This report outlines a series of the strength examination processes, from design examination to wind tunnel testing, and vibration measurement and behavior observation of the real crane.
