The sea container transportation has expanded rapidly with the globalization of an economic activity. But it has been pointed out that the relative service level of Japanese container terminals is unfavorable compared with those provided by other Asian countries. The efficient improvement of cargo handling at Japanese container terminals is requested to enhance their international competitiveness. The important challenge is to improve the container carrying in-and-out procedures through a terminal gate in a more rapid and efficient way for enhancing the convenience of container handling, reducing the handling costs. We have improved the container identification procedures at one terminal gate by constructing a series of identification systems utilizing the latest information technology and mobile terminal devices.
