The increased use of recycled waste paper and the reduced basic weight of paper have induced the rapid increase in the speed of paper and board machines. The current design speed of paper machines reaches 2000 m/min and that of board machines reaches 1800 m/min. Numerous innovative technologies have been developed as a result of the challenges to reduce the basic weight and increase the machine speed. Because of the above technologies, the current design of paper and board machines has become quite similar. In addition, peripheral technologies, such as feed stock optimization, online self-diagnosis of machines, have rapidly advanced to improve the overall efficiency of the paper mill process. This paper reports the new developments of the latest paper machines in individual sections.
