Retrofitting of Shinko Bridge in Yokohama
Masaki ARAI, Kozo HIRATA, Yosuke SAWADA

Shinko Bridge is a historical railway bridge with a truss structure built about 100 years ago at Yokohama harbor. Our company received an order to retrofit the bridge from the Port Authority of Yokohama in February 2001, and completed the work in August 2001. The retrofitting required the following specific technologies:

(1) Detailed inspections and tests prior to the work,

(2) Stripping off old paint film by high-pressure water jets, and

(3) Compact pile driving with the function to break underground obstacles by attaching a bit (BG method).
The retrofitting was one of the cityfs projects to redevelop the Minatomirai 21 Shinko district. This report presents the retrofitting technologies for a historical railway bridge to be used as a promenade of the city.
