Sumitomo Heavy Industries Engineering & Services Co., Ltd. (President and CEO: Katsuhide Yokota; a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Heavy Industries), has put a hybrid power supply system, "SYBRID SYSTEM," for mounting on Rubber Tired Gantry Cranes.on the market.
The "SYBRID SYSTEM" hybrid power supply units can be mounted on Rubber Tired Transfer Gantry Cranes that handle cargo containers at container terminals. The regenerative power generated during lowering and deceleration of the cargo containers are stored in Lithium Ion batteries and used to support hoisting work. Since the "SYBRID SYSTEM", supports the hoisting work, the original engine-generator can be reduced to one-third of it's original size. This makes it possible to reduce the amount of fuel consumed by about 60%. Lithium-ion batteries, which have a high capacity and output and can be recharged repeatedly, are used in the storage device and can also be mounted on existing Rubber Tired Gantry Cranes.. A reduction in engine size will realize not only reduced fuel consumption but also reduced maintenance costs at the same time.
Hongkong International Terminals has confirmed an order for 15 units of this equipment. Their order is a result of a series of evaluation tests of the Sybrid Systemon their Rubber Tired Gantry Cranes at their container yard, performed by our company with their cooperation. Very favorable evaluation results has been the largest factor in this order. Furthermore, we have received cooperation from GS Yuasa Power Supply Ltd. with regard to the lithium-ion batteries.

1) Reduces fuel consumption by up to 60%
An average fuel consumption reduction rate of 59.2% has already been proven with our system in Hongkong International Terminals Ltd. operated Rubber Tired Gantry Cranes three month test operation.
This has been made possible through the application of our many years of experience and accumulated technology as a crane manufacturer, maximizing the use of energy generated during the lowering and deceleration of cargo containers.
2) Reduces engine generator output to one-third (compared of the existing engine generator)
Maintenance costs and exhaust emissions can be lowered because the size of engine generators can be reduced.
3) Is considerate of the environment in ways other than energy conservation by reducing the emission of black smoke
Black smoke emissions are lowered through such means as electric power controls (peak-cut power generation) on the engine generator, to make this equipment environmentally friendly beyond its energy conservation.
4) Lithium-ion batteries, which offer a high output and are suitable for repeated recharging, are used for the storage device.
